16. Work with the rule of participation inequality
Ninety percent of your audience will consume but never contribute, 9% will on occasion add their thoughts to another’s content and 1% are your advocates - passionate and informed enough to share and contribute on a regular basis. Each group needs the other.
17. Don’t underestimate what it takes
Don’t underestimate the time, effort and skill it takes to create and grow an online community to where you can reap the rewards.
18. Learn from physical events
Done well online publishing is an effective way for buyers and sellers to engage on equal terms. In this way online publishing has more in common with physical events and exhibitions than with traditional publishing, online communities love meeting at physical events and vice versa.
19. Be the trusted content filter for your audience
Despite the abundance of “content” on the web today most is still “noise” in the heads of your audience by engaging effectively you start to carve out the virtuous position of the “first port-of-call” for your online offering.
20. Only provide what they want
Your niche audience will value your online offering more if you sift out the irrelevant noise – at times there is more value created in providing less content.
